A Calcutta is an auction pool layered on top of a tournament, not a specific golf format like scramble or stroke play.
Every individual golfer is put up for auction, people bid real money, and the winning bidder becomes the “owner” of that player for the event.
Before the golf round(s), the group holds a live auction, often the night before or right after pairings and tee times are set.
The total of all winning bids becomes the prize pot; payouts go to the owners of the top‑finishing golfers, typically the top two or three individuals.
